Nobody Handed Me Anything in This Profession — Until Somebody Did

An architect I worked for gave me real drawings before I was ready for them. He let me be wrong in front of clients.

That's the only reason I'm licensed today.

Paying It Forward

Eduardo starts with us this week — a student in the Fresno City Architecture Program, fifteen minutes from our office. Fred and I are going to do for him what was done for us.

We're going to hand him real work before he's ready for it. We're going to let him be in the room when things don't go as planned. We're going to let him figure it out — with us beside him, not instead of him.

Here's What That Looks Like

He's not going to shadow someone. He's going to do the work.

He'll be in client meetings. He'll research code. He'll watch drawings get built — and stand on the jobsite when those drawings meet reality and find out which lines were wrong. That's the only education that matters in this profession.

A Message to Students in the Valley

If you're a student in the Central Valley reading this: apply to the small firms.

You'll touch more real work in six months than you will in two years somewhere large. At a small firm there's nowhere to hide — and that's the point. Every project is a live training exercise. Every client meeting is a lesson in communication, expectation-setting, and problem-solving that no classroom can replicate.

The Valley needs architects who know the Valley. Who know its code environment, its permitting culture, its contractors, its community. That knowledge only comes from being here and doing the work — not from a prestigious address on your resume.

We're glad Eduardo chose Fresno. We're glad he chose us.

To the architect who handed me drawings before I was ready: thank you. This is how it continues.
